If you are experiencing low back pain on a chronic basis, meaning the condition persists for more than three months, and it wasn’t brought on by a significant injury, your pain could be posture-related. Those likely to suffer from posture-related low back pain may work at a desk or in a seated position for long periods of time. Repeating the same movement, whether it’s typing or lifting, can also contribute to low back pain.

Here are five things you can do to improve your posture and reduce your pain:

Improve your seated posture.

When seated at a desk or table, keep your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest if they do not reach the floor.

Try not to cross your legs. Keep your ankles in line with or in front of your knees.

Imagine that there is a straight line passing through your upper body from top to bottom. Imagine a force is pulling your body upward through that line, making you taller. Keep your pelvis level and shoulders relaxed, avoiding any excess curvature in your back or slumping forward.

Set a timer.

If your work involves repetitive movements in one position, especially if that position is seated, set yourself a simple recurring alarm that reminds you to get up and take a short walk around your workspace. On a time crunch? Just getting up out of your chair for two minutes contributes to improved mobility and reduced pain.

Squeeze your shoulder blades.

While seated, sit up straight with your hands positioned on your thighs. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your head straight and level. Slowly squeeze your shoulder blades together, as if you were crushing a walnut between them. Hold for five seconds, release, and repeat five times.

Don’t take back pain lying down.

Previously, it was thought that a remedy for low back pain was rest and lying down. Now, we know one of the best ways to reduce back pain is movement. Try low impact exercise like swimming, yoga, walking, or an elliptical machine.
